Columbia Glacier, Alaska, is a dynamic giant—once stretching far into Prince William Sound, it now retreats at one of the fastest rates on Earth. Towering ice cliffs collapse into the sea, feeding iceberg-strewn waters and illustrating, with stark clarity, the impacts of a warming planet.
As the glacier shrinks, it transforms the ecosystem around it. Marine habitats are disrupted, sea levels rise, and communities downstream face growing uncertainty. The once-mighty glacier is not just a relic of the past—it’s a warning for the future.
The first two Wild Gift wilderness treks in 2002 and 2003 were led in Alaska.
