This summer more than 1,100 wildfires broke out across Europe, burning more than 2,500 km of forest. Wildfires, made worse by climate change induced drought and extreme temperatures, are now emitting huge amounts of carbon dioxide into the atmosphere. Fires in Algeria, Canada, Hawaii, Siberia, Greece and Portugal have contributed approximately 1.5 billion tonnes of CO2, or about 4% of the emissions, into the atmosphere.
